Department Profile
- Established in 1968, the Department of Chemistry is committed to providing quality education in chemistry. The erstwhile Aided College was taken over by the Government of Andhra Pradesh on 10 August 2022 vide G.O.Ms.No.28.
- The department offers the B.Sc. Chemistry – Single Major Programme, with physics as the interdisciplinary subject. Students gain a sound knowledge of organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, along with spectroscopy, chromatography, HPLC, environmental chemistry, green and sustainable chemistry and medicinal and herbal chemistry.
- Practical and experiential learning is encouraged through laboratory work, ICT-based teaching, demonstrations, guest lectures, in-house projects and student activities. Students also gain industrial and laboratory exposure through visits to HIQ Pharma Labs, the Ground Water Department Laboratory and a Rubber Processing Unit at Devarapalli.
- To strengthen practical skills, employability and entrepreneurship, the Department conducts skill-development workshops on Soaps and Cosmetics and on Domestic Care Products, along with certificate courses on Food Adulteration and on Medicinal Plants and Herbal Chemistry.
- Through its association with HIQ Pharma Labs and the Ground Water Department, the Department provides students with hands-on training, field exposure and practical learning.
- The Department actively promotes environmental protection and Green and Sustainable Chemistry through the observance of World Environment Day, World Ozone Day and National Science Day, quizzes, and awareness programmes. It also takes part in NSS and extension activities, including the “Joy of Giving” initiative at Katheru Primary School.
- The Department is supported by one regular faculty member and four part-time lecturers.
- The Department aims to develop scientifically knowledgeable, practically skilled and socially responsible students and to prepare them for higher education, employment, research and entrepreneurship in the field of chemistry.
